Le portrait du Louvre de Jean le Bon

The portrait of King John the Good in the Louvre in Paris is considered to be the work of the court painter Girard d'Orleans. The author of the study demonstrates, through analysis of the hallmarks in the border strip of gold background, that the work was made by an artist from the Mediterranean. Specifically, it may have been an Italian or a Catalan who made his way to southern France via Barcelona who received the commission. Other features of the painting, in addition to the hallmarks, suggest that the artist was Italian.
