"...dass er nicht nachgelassen, bis ihm solches Blat aus der Kirche verwilligt worden". Der Erwerb von Albrecht Dürers Rosenkranzfest durch Rudolf II.
This study deals with The Rosary Celebration, the principle Venetian work of Albrecht Dürer, which - thanks to Rudolf II - made its way to Prague. The introduction describes the circumstances of the painting's inception in 1506. The author further attempts to reconstruct the course of its sale and transport, which occurred a year later. The painting is placed in the Prague Kunstkammer in 1621. The article closely examines the motives behind Rudolf's strong interest in Dürer's painting, the religious and political content of which the author explains in the context of contemporary social affairs. He also gives some attention to the contacts between the emperor's court and the Venetian art market.
