Klee's Senecio and 'senecio' in Rome
The painter Paul Klee was one of the avant-garde artists who drew inspiration from classical culture. The marble disk, today placed in the portico of the Church of S. Maria in Cosmedin in Rome and known as the bocca della verita, was clearly one of the sources of his artwork. It is probable that the face of the old faun with long hair and a beard inspired Klee's 1922 Senecio painting.
