The Rembrandt Battle: the Search for National Art in Weimar Germany
The article treats the changing reception of Rembrandt's work, from the nationalist and anti-Semitic interpretations, to the attempts to explain his painting style as an expression of the identity of the models, and the nationalist understanding of colour and style. At the same time, the author draws attention to the complex promotion of an empirical-critical approach in German art history, against the broader backdrop of the interwar dispute over Rembrandt.
