Exile Artists Look Back: Between the Tunnel Vision of Antifascism and the Constraints of Appeasement
Keith Holz's study deals with six works by German artists (Hanns Kralik, Heinz Lohmar, John Heartfield, Dorothea Koeppen) who were living in exile in Prague or Paris in 1933 - 1939. In the said works, they focused on the topic of anti-fascism, criticism of the appeasement policy exercised against Germany, reflections on how the German National Socialists got into power, the position of women in nazi Germany and the persecution of the Jews. At the end of the study, the author deals more generally with the position and expression of the exiled artists who were influenced by contemporary events, including the restrictive policy of appeasement.
