Collective Desires: Czech Avant-Garde Architecture and the Production of Degendered Space
Martina Pachmanová's study analyses the role of gender in the avant-garde project of building a classless society. The author points at the close links between the struggle for a new lifestyle and the issues of female emancipation, fashion, housing, etc. At the same time, she highlights a certain paradox: Czech leftist intellectuals were promoting a collective equality of sexes and a cancellation of the institution of family, but at the same time they were living in the old Victorian model assigning to women the role of housewives or roles subjecting them to visual and power control.
